PAPPA DEAUX – CAJUN SEAFOOD | DALLAS, TX
While in Dallas, TX we needed to stop by Pappa Deaux for some of the best cajun seafood in the area that our friends recommended. On Labor Day Monday there was no line or wait time and we were seated right away.

The get things started we ordered a round of fresh oysters. Big and meaty and full of flavor that was a little different than what we get back home in California. The taste could be from where they are from or just keeping up with the Texas saying, “everything’s bigger in Texas”.
Christina and I decided to order and share so we can try more of the menu items so we started with this Andouille Sausage and Seafood Gumbo bowl. Spicy sausage on top of the gumbo to give it several great flavor profiles in each spoonful. The seafood gumbo was amazing since it had whole oysters in it along with my favorite Okra! The gumbo was a great way to explore the tastes and food of the cajun cuisine but there is more on the way!
Crispy Fried Alligator was up next. They say everything is better fried and they are right! Fried calamari, chicken, frogs legs and veggies are good so this must be good and my first time trying alligator. The outside was crispy and standard while the inside meat was tender and moist. Yes, it tasted like chicken but like the thigh and not the bland wing. A little bit of chewy fat and no bones made for a great fried treat when dipped in the creole sauce and added with the potato crisps on the plate.
Time for the main dish and the excitement has been building since all the other dishes were so good! This is the Mississippi Catfish Opelousas which has all the good stuff on one plate. Blackened catfish is the main star but there is a saucy masterpiece on the side that is sharing the spotlight of the catfish. On the side is a jumbo lump crab meat, scallop and oysters in a lemon butter sauce all mixed together and slow cooked for them to be soft but keeping their own flavors against the lemon butter sauce! As filler, the rice is on the plate but it is not a filler like a pilaf or white rice. Dirty rice is good on its own and tastes great so a bit of fish and rice and that is a great combo right here. This last plate was the most filling and so good, having two catfish fillets makes for a great deal and we were satisfied after eating.
here are so many places to choose when it comes to food in the Dallas area but you need to listen to your gut feeling. Pappa Deaux was one of my most favorite places to eat in my several trips to Dallas, TX. BBQ is in its own category but this place I will definitely want to come back and try more.
